Hiking in Kauai
I was very fortunate to go to Kauai. Of course, behing a hiking gal, I had to hike all over Kauai. I have to say, other than how gorgeous the scenery is in Kauai, hiking in Santa Barbara is way better. Hiking in Kauai is difficult. It is muddy and slippery most of the time. It is often overgrown and treacherous as well. The beaches in Kauai are so much better than Santa Barbara! I really enjoyed the warm water and snorkeling. So many pretty fish in the ocean! I swam alone with a giant sea turtle for 20 minutes, too. I actually enjoyed the beaches more than the hiking most of the time.
Here are a few pictures from some of the hikes TrailHacker and I did in Kauai.
Waimea Canyon. You can see this view on a drive. We also did a Sierra Club hike that was a loop hike to a lookout inside the canyon.
Awa'awapuhi Trail. This used to be a nice loop trail but part of the loop has fallen away. So we chose one of the ends of the loop to an overlook that looks over the Na Pali Coast.
Kalalau Lookout. You can drive to a vista point and then hike down what used to be a jeep road to more lookouts of Kalalau Canyon. A week later we hiked the Kalalau Trail to the beach down at the bottom.
Alakai Swamp Trail. One of the coolest trails we did was the Alakai Swamp Trail. Beyond Kalalau Lookout you start the trail. The trail is on boardwalks most of the way and features some of the only native forest left. We ran out of time and could not complete the trail to the Kilohana Vista but we got pretty close.
Kahili Ridge Trail. This was a crazy idea. We did not get very far. It became too steep and we couldn't hardly hold on!
Maha'ulepu Trail. This was one of the most beautiful beach hikes we did. I have more pictures here.
Kalalau Trail and Backpack Trip. This was one of the most beautiful places on earth. I have more pictures here.
