Many hikes in the Los Padres National Forest, that start from Paradise Rd. or near the San Rafael Wilderness area require you to purchase an Adventure Pass from the Forest Service. The adventure pass is not required for Camino Cielo Road anymore, or for any place within the National Forest where there are no "improvements", such as picnic tables, informational signage or toilets.
The prices are $5 for a day pass and $30 for a yearly pass.
Local merchants sell the pass, but since there is considerable controversy about the Adventure Pass program, the list of stores may change at any time due to boycotting or political views. The following stores have been known to carry the Pass, but who knows for sure if they still do:
- Big 5 Sporting Goods, 5 Points Shopping Center, State and La Cumbre.
- Far West Gun Supply, State and Mission
- Other Mountaineering stores may carry it, such as Mountain Air Sports, State and Cabrillo; The Trailhead, State and Ortega.
The Pass can be purchased at the Forest Service Station on Paradise Road.
You can always forget to buy a pass and risk getting a notice on your windshield. The penalty is you have to buy a pass after the fact and send in the serial number on the pass.
