Lizard's Mouth

West Camino Cielo Road offers hiking trails that are different from the usual Santa Barbara fare. Situated on the crest of the Santa Ynez Mountains looking over the city of Goleta, these trails are shorter and have different goals than the front country trails above Santa Barbara. These trails are not maintained except by the people who use them. Please do the same if you use them.

Lizard's Mouth is an easy 1/4 mile walk to some rock outcroppings where one can explore, go bouldering, watch the sunset, or just sit and look at the sweeping view of Goleta and the ocean.

Careful of broken glass. This is also one of those high school kid party-hangouts.

I have recently heard that Lizards Mouth and Playgrounds are closed for a extended period of time do to the plant seeds that are being dropped on the ashen soil. Is there any truth to these rumors?

The Lizards Mouth Hike was great today. Hiking conditions were perfect exept for the occational broken bottle here and there. There was some burned area at the mouth of the trail, but it didn't effect the trail too much. There was a small slit in the sand stone on one of the larger boulders, looks similar to what I have heard about of the "Narrows" at the Playgrounds although I couldn't follow it all the way because it got too tight.

This is my favorite spot to watch the sunset over goleta. Great place for an early evening date. Some fun rocks to play on. Its like a naturally made jungle gym.
