San Ysidro Trail
San Ysidro Trail begins in Montecito. The usual destination is a tall grotto waterfall about 2 miles from the trailhead, making the hike relatively mild. This waterfall can be quite impressive after a strong rain, and very tranquil in the drier months. Continue past the waterfall out of the shade and into the chaparral and the hike becomes quite strenuous in its relentless climb to East Camino Cielo Rd. at the summit, a 9 mile round trip. An excellent workout.
Begin the hike on San Ysidro Trail at the sign. Stay on the trail and off of private property.
At 2 tenths of a mile, join paved road. Turn left. The trail parallels the road in some spots, or you can follow the road. You may see a chain-link gate across the road. Find the trail to the left of the road and bushes and do not go through the gate.
The pavement ends and the dirt road begins with a heavy gate and a junction with the Old Pueblo Trail. Continue through the gate and follow the dirt road.
At just under the one mile mark, the trail leaves the road. The trail is marked with a sign.
San Ysidro Creek was heavily impacted by the debris flow that came after the Thomas Fire. It had to be rebuilt.
At 1.75 miles there is a meeting of the creek you have been following with a larger creek coming in from the right. You will have to cross the creek coming in from your right. The trail will continue on the other side and begin its long climb up out of the canyon and up to East Camino Cielo. To see the waterfall instead, descend into the creek you have been following all along and find the path of least resistance up to the waterfall. Returning to your car, this will be about 3 miles round trip.
To follow the main trail, cross the creek and begin climbing. The trail becomes steeper and more exposed with lots of switchbacks.
At just under 4.5 miles you reach the summit with East Camino Cielo Rd. It has been a relentless climb, but you are rewarded with excellent views of the city and the ocean. 9 miles round trip.
To get back to the car, turn back the way you came.
